Just my personal point of view: I would have a better feeling if the degen would have the proper SS cast pommel. Additionally I have not seen any PACK SS NCO degen up to now but naturally I have not seen all. For me it is a PACK police NCO degen issued through SS channels with switched grip (grip is obviously a correct SS NCO grip) with an added engraving to the pommel - whenever this engraving was done.
It might be a period done alteration because I do have some wearing photographs with things you would never believe it was worn during the period (also SS Degens) when it would not be documented in a period pic but we will never know for sure.
As said, just my personal pov.

I have already checked the engraving (post #301476) before I have done my statement. The additional pics are good and strengthen my opinion. The engraving for sure was NOT done yesterday (e.g. see "1" - a small damage) but imho rust as it occurs on the pommel would have damaged the edges of the engraving on many places. Which he does not as there are straight, sharp edges, see e.g. "2" and "3". An in Hand inspection would be much better as judging it only from pics and the engraving si not easy to be judged because of the additional blackening (which does look to me pretty recent and looks like laquer) but all is my personal opinion due to what I can see in the pics. If rust pitting intrudes into the engraving that is a very good sign. Can you see any rust pitting inside (in the bottom) of the engraving?

stingray, thank you for the additional pics. In These extremely detailed pics you can see a lot of wearing/Age traces on the pommel But the edges of the engraving is sharp without any harm. For me -from these pics- a not period done engraving. Regards,

Very likely a wise decision IMO. Being in agreement with Wotan that the pommel engraving does not in my own estimation appear to be consistent with a period done item. Best Regards, Fred
