A friend brought this sword to me. It appears to be a US 1840 sword except that I have never seen one with this type of basket. The only markings anywhere on the sword is the "S&K" makers mark on the blade. I know they made swords for many different countries. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian Rich

Not a US sword but it looks Italian from what I can see. It was made by Schnitzler & Kirshbaum in Solingen around 1865. The blade may not be original to the sword as I can see the tang sticking up on the pommel.

You are correct, I took your information and did a search, Here's what I found:
Italian M1860 Cavalry Sabre

Excellent condition Italian M1860 Cavalry Sabre. Mounted with a massive, slightly curved blade that measures 35" in length. The blade wears a single large fuller on both sides, remains in excellent condition and is marked on the ricasso "BI". The steel cup guard also remains very nice with very nice patina. The leather covered hilt is healthy, with its original twisted wire wrap still tightly in place. The large, heavy metal scabbard remains very nice as well with no dings. Overall measuring 42 3/4" in length.

Price: $400.00USD

I found two or three identical swords complete with photos, all in the $350-400 range. The one I posted seems to be missing the pommel cap and the grip is ruined.
Thanks,
