Just pulled this one out of the ether. Blade is near mint, silver fittings have turned a nice black patina. I believe Anton Wingen was one of the few makers who etched their marks on hunting/forestry pieces.

THAT is a great looking Fanger! I think it is the first I have seen by Wingen. Thanks for showing. Kevin.

Thanks for the compliment. I think it's keeper. The only other one I've seen by this maker is a deluxe example recently sold on Johnson's website...

This is a very nice conditioned DJ dagger. I am not sure about the mm and therefore if the dagger is pre 45. Once I have had a discussion with a very experienced member and his opinion concerning Wingen mms was that it would need to be a stamped mm. But this dagger looks very convincing to me.
It would be a pleasure and educative if Houston would step in an tell us his experienced opinion. Naturally all other experienced opinions would be appreciated.

Wingen used both etched and stamped marks, this is without doubt pre 1945, I own one with exactly the same mark, there are a number known with this mark.

Thanks for your input, Gary. Beautiful fanger you have. I obtained mine from the widow of an Illinois vet who brought it back. I showed mine to Tom Whitmann who said this etched Wingen mark was absolutely pre-45 correct...

Baz69, thank you very much for your experienced comment and the pics of this nice, additional specimen (even with professional hunter´s portepee).

I have been fortunate enough in communicating with the widow of the vet who returned with this deluxe presentation piece, and have a copy of the bring back papers, so can positively confirm that this mark is period. It is interesting to note that the widow states that the vet returned to the scene of the capture in 1994 and attempted to return this remarkable piece to its rightful owner. Fortunately-for me at least- he was unsuccessful.

Further pics are available on page 2 of the display case section of my website. Thanks for looking

The level of hand enhancement to this piece is quite remarkable and testament to the skill and patience of the artisan.

Paul,

Pat is right, that example is nothing short of stunning. It touches so many high points, condition, scarce maker, super hand enhanced details & a presentation to an individual. Just wow.

Beautiful pieces all shown here.

It's a good thing I only collect Eickhorns, or I would be extremely green with envy!

Congrats to all.

This is a beautiful hirschfänger, Anton Wingens are not seen often but the long deluxe type even more rarely, add the shooting dedication and you have a super rare piece.
