Hi Scott,
i think the "blackened motto" is a kind of "protective coating",which were applied after the etch.
Here are some close up's,note the red marks, where it's still visible. The last pic is from an early dagger, which was disappeared from the market since 1949.
You'll see the Factory finish!
Regards,
Gerd

Thanks for this info Gerd,

Have you noticed some early Rohm Bokers with uncleaned blades with origional crossgrain have no blackened motto but a silver grey motto ?

Here is a few for Pauls archives : https://www.lakesidetrader.com/Archives/item.php?ID=9614

The first shown in the link,is the same like one of mine above and regarding the 2nd,it's still visible in the TM and the Röhm inscription, imo.

Ok, so i guess its mainly down to over cleaning of the blade & motto to see an uncleaned blade with a nice origional Dark burnished motto compared to an over cleaned blade with a Silver Grey motto showing the its pimpels ?

I wouldn't say over cleaned, but cleaned. That means "cleaned" with a dry cloth,

Boker did not have the best etching process. The etching results usually had a rough appearance. Therefore, Boker used a very dark, blackish substance on the etches to "hide" the etch imperfections. To my knowledge, it is the only manufacturer to have done this. Others used the gray coating or no coating at all.

That's a lovely dagger Paul! Doesn't matter if them SS daggers are a bit dirty...it's their history that counts, especially when you are able to ID the original owner. I presume that one has sold already?
