Hi Rod,, very Nice Voss dagger. The cool thing about brigade marked SA daggers is some of them are traceable ,, and unlike the SS daggers,, the SA gruppe mark at least points in the direction to where this SA mann was stationed. Very rare maker for sure! regards Larry

Thank You for the compliment Larry. It would be nice if a person could trace this to the original SA man! Rod

Noticed that the hanger ring is mounted in a different position than it should be! The solder looks old and was probably period done? Was it uncommon for these to come lose and be replaced at a different angle? Rod

This maker mark is accepted in the dagger collecting community as a "fox". I know I will get some flack for this because the artery-hardened collecting community never wants to hear something that goes against what is accepted. I believe that this maker mark is actually an elephant and here's why: The Germans colonized east and south Africa prior to WWII. (During this period they imported ebony from the Congo that was used in SS dagger grips... did you think ebony grew in Europe?) Voss is a name that has been associated with several families in German colonial Africa, at least one of which was a tool maker. Now... if you look at the maker mark what do you really see? A fox, or an elephant head complete with ears, trunk and two places where the tusks would be?

My guess would be if anyone looks at anything hard enough,, they can make it into anything they want. It does have its characteristics about being an elephant,, but also has the same of a Fox which,, visually the mind associates the long nose with that type of animal first. Foxes also have "sly eyes" Whos to say? It could be an elephant! is the tip of the nose an opening for the elephant,, or just a rounded nose for the fox! One thing is for sure Voss didnt make SS daggers. The Boker logo as said by many has the looks of a "mausoleum window" with a tree in the middle. Is it a window or is it the first image that pops up in a persons mind of what it might look like? Interesting observation.

Small historical note. Germany colonized NE Africa, East Africa, and SW Africa prior to WWI, not WWII. All these (and other) German colonies were stripped from Germany and distributed to countries belonging to the allies. Where the manufacturers of SS daggers got the ebony for their grips could well be east Africa or could be India or Ceylon as it was then called. But we are talking about SA Daggers. As to what that trademark looks like, I will go with "Fox". Early tonight I will have a Gin & Tonic or two and maybe it will look like something else. Hardened Artery Collector

Let me put this Elephant /Fox debate to rest. I have an old Gustav Voss add from Germany that says "Fabrikmark Fuchskopf" of coarse fuchs kopf is fox head in english..Kevin.

The manufacturer's image seems to me that is a fox, if an elephant I think that would have added fangs ...

Ha Ha I thought it looked more like a bat, a common skate or one of the helicopter things you would throw that came back to you. Graphic artists see the world in a different light ^,^
Very nice dagger as well, beautiful blade.
