It is properly read as "1. Oktober 1890 / 1 Eskadron, Braunschweig Husaren Regiment 17" and translated as "1. October 1890, 1 Schwadron of the Brunswick Husar Regiment No.17". The Eskadron was the smallest tactical unit of the Imperial German Army, of which there were five in each Husar Regiment. Husar Regiment Nr. 17 was located in Braunschweig and was a contingent of the 20th Division of the 10 Armee Korps.

I will try to find some info on the SA unit on the lower guard.

Heavy D, the SA inscription is a bit more problematical. The "Ns" indicated the SA Gruppe Niedersachsen. The rest of the crossguard inscription. apart from the date, is a bit confusing. SA Sturm R 5/92 would normally indicate Sturm 5 of SA Reiterstandarte 92. According to the SHAEF SA manual, R92 was located in the city of Stockerau in SA Gruppe Donau (Austria). Quite a long way from Braunschweig. On the other hand, the was an SA Standarte 92 located in Braunschweig, part of SA Gruppe Niedersachsen. If the "R" does not indicate Reiter (mounted), then it would mean Reserve. But the SHAEF directory does not list a Reserve Standarte 92 in Braunschweig. The Reserve Standarte for the SA Brigade was R58 in Braunschweig. So, unfortunately the meaning of the bottom inscription is a bit confusing right now.

Joe is doing a great job. My only comment is that the inscription probably dates from 1934 as the dagger is a ground Roehm and the SHAEF Manual is from the end of the war. Just like the HJ, the SA changed designations over time and units were either moved or deleted rather regularly, so the hunt is more complicated.

Ron, how can the inscription date from 1934 (ground Roehm) when it is clearly dated to 1940? The SHAEF manuals may have been prepared for release to advancing troops in 1944/45, but they were clearly prepared with intelligence gleaned from the pre-war period as well as war-time as evidenced by photos used in some of the manuals like the police. And the SHAEF G-2 realized the changing landscape and issued an updated addendum to the first SA manual. I admitted there still are some questions that need to be explained.
