I recommend without reserve:

"The Order of the Death's Head" by Heinz Hohne.

After reading many histories of the SS, I believe that this is the absolute best to understand the tangled and twisted relationship between the SA and the SS until mid 1934 as well as the later complexity of the SS.

This book is from the 1960's and I think many later authors may well have used his work as a reference.

You can find inexpensive copies on the internet.

It is a fine book and using its bibliography, one can find even more information. After all, Hohne mined other sources for his work. But a small word of caution. This is an english language translation of a German book, and every so often one finds an error. In reading Hohne's description of the SS officer ceremony in the Reichs Chancellory, the English translation described how each officer received his "dagger". Huh? I read this years ago. So I found a copy of the original German book and looked up that description. The German word used was "Degen"! The translator assumed a phonetic equivalent- Dagger- instead of bothering to look up the word to find "Sword".
