"The Gestapo: A History of Horror" - Jacques Delarue
"Mother Night" & "Slaughterhouse Five" - Kurt Vonnegut 1970s (fiction)
"The Mind of Adolf Hitler" - Walter Langer 1972 (a psychological assessment from Britain)
"The Illustrated History of the Third Reich" - John Bradley (a good coffee-table book)
"Edged Weapons of Hitler's Germany" - Robin Lumsden 2001
"Tears in the Darkness: the true story of the Bataan death march" - Ben Steele 2009 (also an audiobook, very graphic)
"Johnny Got His Gun" - Dalton Trumbo 1938 (WWI anti-war book which was banned during WWII, then again for Vietnam but then un-banned, much better than the 1970s movie)

2. To Hell and Back by Audie Murphy.
Here are two books that I first read as a child in the early 1950's that pretty much sealed my life-time interest in WWII history. Over the years, I have re-read both over a dozen times and realized I had unintentionally committed Murphy's 1st paragraph to memory. "On a hill overlooking the invasion beaches of Sicily, etc."
Carter's book is written by one of the original members of the 504th PIR of the 82nd Airborne. These guys saw well over a year of front line combat. ("take that!", you Band of Brothers)
