I'd like to see a complete list of WWII movies (the ones worth watching, since I'm sure I haven't seen them all). I know a lot of those black and white 1950's ones are so terrible you can't even sit through them (writing and acting-wise. I'll start.

A Bridge Too Far 1977
A Farewell To Arms 1932 (WWI)
All Quiet On The Western Front 1930 (WWI)
Band of Brothers (hbo miniseries)
Biloxi Blues 1988 (matthew broderick)
Cross of Iron 1977
Das Boot 1981 (subtitles)
Enemy at the Gates 2000
Escape to Victory 1981 (sylvester stallone)

Force 10 From Navarone 1978
From Here to Eternity 1953
Hart's War 2002 (bruce willis)
Ilsa Series 1970s
In Harm's Way 1965 (john wayne)
Kelly's Heroes 1970
Letters From Iwo Jima 2006 (japanese)
Memphis Belle 1990

Try "Went the day Well" a British propaganda movie from the 1940's. Strong stuff for those days.

Right on Gaspare Way more eazy and more info. Its not truly complete tho, for exemple I miss Victory Through Airpower, its Disney/animation, but, the lovely Bedknobs an Broomsticks, has animation too, and that's listed. Anyhow, good one!

I recommend A Long Day's Dying with David Hemmings, from 1968.

Very strange and surreal movie about British and German paratroopers fighting each other in a landscape of death and destruction.

It's worth a watch IMHO

Wow, never thought the list would be that long. It doesn't address which are "worth watching", but it's a great start. Why not watch them all and then decide?

"Von Ryan's Express", pretty good and not too predictable, it sure is easy to take away machine guns from germans isn't it?
"Hart's War", started out good, but a little too unrealistic, still Bruce Willis is great in it.
"U-571", completely ridiculous storyline, waste of time.
"Mrs. Miniver" 1942 has the actor that played the angel Clarence from "It's A Wonderful Life" 1946. Both were well made, of course the latter is much better, though not really a war film.

90% of newer movies in general are just terrible all around, superficial, CGI, playing to the lowest common denominator. Makes me appreciate older movies in a new way.

Spacey has got the right idea for movies. Make it a review of what you have seen rather than a list from the Internet.

The Longest Day - Pretty comprehensive and very close to what actually happened. Shot early enough that period vehicles were available.

Kelly's Heroes - Improbably story line but great entertainment by seasoned actors. Good period vehicles too. Great lines .... "Wasted trip. No one said nothing about no Tigers."

The list is just to see whats out there,,,and from the other countries. The soviets produced 100s of WW2 movies that don't appear on the list. Many are very very good,,you just have to hunt them down..

The oldies can be tough to watch after 20 times or so in the past. But come on,,when the last time you watched Castle Keep? or Gregory Pecks over acting in Boys from Brazil! grin

If your into partisan movies,,'Come and See' is the best,,I've heard a few times it was made with live ammo!

Yes agree! And also, reviews are needed, but we all have other tastes and likes, so, to call a movie bad on like is no fair, will be difficult to keep that sortof out?

I think, not al new movies are bad. "Flammen & Citronen" is good! The story is in Copenhagen captiol of Danmark, and, is about resistance. It realy tries to set the atmosphere like it was back then, also has details right like uniforms and trucks, decorations whatever, and even has a bit of romance too in a totally weird violent bloodstained nazi-occupied-world full of treason nd backstabbery.

Actuly makes me think of the book "Kort Amerikaans" by Jan Wolkers, that takes place at the last winter of the war in Leiden in Holland. The comparison, is surely not litteral in any way!! Because, Hans Wolkers tells from within 1 person, that gets lonelier. No the movie watches like a literature book, and the complex atmosfere of threat worry danger fear anger is very realistic, difrent motives, integrity of evreybody involved.

"Flammen & Citronen" is about right\wrong, about no black\white, and how nobody comes out unscared, or, even average good, not even the main characters who, resist occupation and fight back, but even at a point their intentions are doubtful. Watch the trailer here. Other awesome movies on resistance are the dutch "Zwartboek" and the French "L'Armée du crime". But maybe someoneelse wants to do these.

What I meant by "newer movies" are like romance comedies, pixar, seth rogan, ashton kutcher, transformers, CGI movies with no storyline...

Thanks to the internet list though, now I have 30 more to watch - most are old, but I'd never heard of Blackbook. I was actually surprised Tom Cruise didn't screw up Valkyrie.

Yeah well, none of those, did\is anything war'ish, so I wasnt thinking those at all, but, I hear you, and agree just a LITTLE, but, also I do like those, (well NOT transformers LOL but the others) and must say, the Pixar movies I like a lot, like Toy Story, Ratatouille, are great!

Youll like Blackbook, it has toecurl-moments tho, things SO unfair, give you goosebumps. And YES Valyrie was good, I agree! Other new'ish movies you may like, the two by Clint Eastwood are good; Letters from Iwo Jima is VERY good also VERY VERY intense, way too intens to watch in 1 go for me, and Flags Of Our Fathers, I didnt like so much, but its good cause it tells a bit about what happens back home in USA too. Anyways have fun with all of the movies you watch!!

Ok, I gotta admit that Pixar's "Toy Story" 1-2 are good movies, but the only ones. Please tell me no one else thinks Seth Rogan and Kutcher are good actors.

Who is this Set Rogan anyhow and who said anything about good actors? Ashton Kutchner, he cant play but I like for exemple the movie "No Strings Attached " anyway. But, back to warmovies?? And better actors .. Like in "The Scarlett And The Black". The story about a vatican employee, that helps hides refugees, like jewish people, and shot down allied pilots. A true story, not inyerface like Saving Private Ryan or anything, but, very tense, and yes maybe told a bit nicer then it was. Pretty awesome that the black (SS officer) irl is caught and trialed, but, that his oponent (the scarlet) made loyal visits to him in prison. Also a story about very hard decisions again.

Sounds good, but I can't find "Scarlett and the Black". Foreign film I guess?

"Castle Keep" 1969 was good but really weird. Typical 60's trip movie I guess.

"A Midnight Clear" 1992 was very good. Dark ending, but you gotta love Gary Sinese in anything.

"Bedknobs and Broomsticks" 1971 was a real waste of time. Angela Landsbury as an inept witch.

"A Man Called Sarge" 1990 I guess supposed to be a comedy, but not funny or worth watching.

"A Matter of Life and Death" 1946 B&W movie with mostly dialogue, Germans trying to infiltrate Canadian Amish-type people. More of a ideology/propaganda movie really.

"Battle of Britain" 1965 pretty good for it's time, but not great. Really bad special effects during the fighting scenes.

"Wind talkers" 2002 Nicholas Cage movie where he's an inept drunk commander, drinking warm liquor out of bottles like he always does...not too bad though.

"Capt. Corelli's Mandolin" 2001 another Nick Cage war movie, this time he's an Italian officer who falls in love with a Greek woman. Seems pretty unrealistic, but worth watching.

"To End All Wars" 2001 w/ Kiefer Sutherland. Movie about Bataan, pretty graphic but very good. "Tears in the Darkness" is a book about Bataan & Ben Steele & gave me nightmares it was so graphic and disturbing.

"Downfall" 2005 Great movie about the Fuehrer bunker, excellent acting/writing/effects!

"Conspiracy" 2001 All dialogue from real transcripts. Very moving and informative! Great acting and choice of similar looking actors!

I now have about 250 war movies and haven't even seen half. Yea!

"Decision Before Dawn" 1951 - one of those boring ones in my opinion
"Destination Tokyo" 1943 - another boring one
"Command Decision" 1949 - boring
"Cross of Iron" 1977 - couldn't get into it, turned it off after 30 min.
"Defiance" 2008 - excellent film, good acting, good action, special effects, writing...
"Das Boot" 1981 - (english subtitles) excellent and a classic in foreign film studies classes.
"Empire of the Sun" 1987 - ok, but not great, a little too Spielberg-y for me. Not really a war film, more about a little boy.
"Enemy at the Gates" 2000 - excellent action, writing, action... Jude Law (from "Saving Private Ryan") is in this one too. German vs. Russian snipers. Who will win?
"Escape to Victory" 1981 - Sylvester Stallone as a soccer player/trying to escape POW camp, not that great, but ok just to watch.
"Enigma" 2001 - Kate Winslet, starts out slow, but gets better...an English drama/romance/spy movie mostly.
"Escape From Sobibor" 1987 - excellent, moving, good story.
"Fatherland" 1984 - great tv movie, one of those alternate history stories where the Axis wins and now it's the 1960s.
"Flags of Our Fathers" 2006 - excellent and Eastwood directed I think.
"Force 10 From Navarone" 1978 - Harrison Ford in sequel to "The Guns of Navarone", good, but you can tell it's a 1970's movie and has a pretty unbelievable storyline.

OK, the movie idea died. What about a list of documentaries? We all know some are riviting, some are mediocre, and some are just plain boring. Here's my list of 344 gigs worth of 'em...

I can't tell you which ones you'll like, but here they are alphabetical.

I've been looking for Die Bruecke (The Bridge) both versions 1959 and 2008 but can only find Russian, Nederland, Finnish and Swedish subtitles. The 2008 version was a TV movie. I will keep looking...

The 1959 version: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052654/

The 2008 version: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1119180/

I just watched "NaPolA: Elite fur den Fuhrer" 2004 - it was ok, but not much action; not too believable really.
NaPolA info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384369/

Also just watched "Blackbook: Schwarzbuch" 2006 - you've got action, nudity, intrigue, the Dutch resistance...what else do you want in a WWII movie? Pretty good and I thought the acting was done well.
Blackbook info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389557/

Agreed. But, the 1959 was made in a very different time, its also very good for what it was, and is, I think

Hi Spacey! I think I have english, polish and frenchs subs for the 1959 version .. I'll check the 2008 version for subs, it was a rental and I had to wait for weeks for the DVD to get in the library. When I go there tomorow to bring and take books, I'll see if they still have it. If subs can be downloaded, they can be grabbed (?) from DVD right? Could be it only has a soundtrack for other languages, Germany doesn't do subtitles, it does voiceovers. But, this is a German movie, and it was a German DVD. I dont remember a language selection, maybe thats the problem .. Anyhow, long story, will check for subs O K?

Yes, if you can find a .srt file for either, that would work if playing with vlc media player. Getting subs off a DVD may or may not work...never tried that. Thanks.

If anyone really want to get back on this train...

Grave of the Fireflies 1988 - an animation drama of WWII Japan (really strange)

Guadalcanal Diary 1943 - I thought it was a little dry like many 1940's war movies

Hart's War 2002 - Bruce Willis does a good acting job and there's a slightly unbelievable story attached, but it doesn't ruin the whole movie. Good ending.

Hell in the Pacific 1968 - not the best one, but ok to just watch once.

Hellcats of the Navy 1957 - (didn't like it that much)

Ike: Countdown to D-Day 2004 - TV Movie with Tom Selleck! Yes, our Magnum PI is Eisenhower in this docu-drama. Pretty good for a TV movie especially. Sure, he doesn't look like Ike, but I'll take good acting over look-alikes any day.

Ilsa: Movie Series 1975-1977 - These are the strangest, weirdest movies to include WWII. They're in the 1970's "sexploitation" genre, and were getting away with nudity because they could claim there was "historical significance". I think the Ilsa character may have been crafted after the infamous Elsa Koch: the bitch of Bergen-Belsen. What do you think?

In Harm's Way 1965 - Well, the Duke makes a pretty good war movie, though unrealistic in my opinion, I still like him as a WWII soldier better than a cowboy.

Kelley's Heroes 1970 - It's ok, but it's action/comedy/war if you like that sort of movie.

I did not see Casablanca listed, which I think is not only a great movie but also a war movie.
My short list, not in order of preference:
Sgt York
Patton
Fury
Saving Private Ryan
Das Boot
Platoon
Glory
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
Run Silent, Run Deep
The Road to Paradise (or is it Paradise Road?)
Casablanca
the Longest Day
