Okay, I'm not a helmet guy and I don't play one on T.V. So this fact will become even clearer when I ask what makes it so special and other than an FJ, what is it's historical significance? Thanks for your help on this one! Bill

My understanding is that this is a very early M36 para helmet but believed to be an experimental model. YOu can see that by the four slots for the original straps. The production model of the M36 had two slots. These helmets originally were fitted with M31 liners, which were found inadequate for jumping as well as vent holes like the M35. When the helmets were refurbished later they were refitted with the regular M38 liner (you can see the holes from the original M31 liner rivets) and regular FJ hardness.
The M36 is rare in its own, but this very early version is only known to exist in a very few examples. I cannot say that it is five, but it is one of the rarest and most desirable German helmets in any condition!

Bob, At the risk of commiting heresy - several years ago, I had a camo M38 with a good sized dent in one side. Other than the dent, it was a nice clean piece. I took it to a friend who owned a body shop and asked him if he could do anything with it. After explaining to him that the paint could not be disturbed in any way and if he had any doubts whatsoever to just leave it as it was. He looked at it and said "wait a minute" and disappeared with the helmet into another part of the shop. Five minutes later, he was back with a perfect undented helmet. I guarantee that whoever owns the helmet now, has no inkling that it once had a large dent in the right side. You have a beautiful unique helmet!!

Somewhere on one of the other forums Eric Q started a thread in which he posted pics of all of the M-36 FJ helmets he knows of. I believe the one Bob I. posted above was once owned by a well-know collector from Northern Europe. When Bob mentioned that it has a dent and crease I rememebered the pics. Now if I can only find the thread started by Eric. Congrats Bob, a stunning helmet, John

I believe this particular helmet was once owned by Anders Skotte. I have a photo he sent me of his FJ helmets about 7-8 years ago, and the shelf counted 24 visible on photo (of his total collection of 30 at that time). Bob's helmet was sitting on the third shelf from top in the middle. The helmet sitting immediately to its right (a non decaled near mint ckl M38) is today in my collection.
There appears to be 4 M36 helmets on the photo, of which 2 are Heer and only one is the double slotted experimental (Bob's helmet)
Small world....

Hey Guys! Honestly, I can’t keep a helmet unless it is a camo. This one has tempted me just for the rarity of it but I can’t keep it. If it were a camo though, I would never let it go! The other two helmets are just as unique in their own rights. Thanks everyone! Bob PS- Denny, if the paint was not disturbed nor was the helmet altered or disassembled I personally do not have a problem with the repair your friend made. However, sometimes damage can be “sexy”. Most often it is not, but there are a few helmets that are.
