Hello,

I'd like to inform you about the new fakes.
Somebody started to reproduce these early Austro-Hungarian daggers.
I saw two fake Danube Steam Navigation Company daggers also last month, so be careful!

This seller usually sells repro Hungarian daggers.

Hi Janos.

I agree. This seller has already sold two fantasy Hungarian daggers for over $1,000 on eban and now this one.

What can we do?

These seem to be nicely crafted Jim. Any idea as to where they are being made?

Hi Jim,

I was hoping Janos would put in his two cents. We believe they are being made in Hungary at the original manufacturers often using original dies.

This is what makes things so difficult.

I am wondering who is buying it, and the prices go up to $600-700 and over. he sold at lease 3 daggers within the last month.

Are these really being made at the original manufacturers and using original dies

These latest reproductions are really bothersome because I own two of the few originals. Fortunately, experts can tell the difference.

But, what the seller is doing is fraud and he is criminal.

The Austrian went for $2,500 and he already has another reproduction up for auction.

Jim M, if you want to know who is making these, contact old Irish on Ebay. He seems to be plugged into the factory.

Jim,
I agree, what this ebay seller doing is disgusting.

What I know the repros were made in Hungary, but I don't have further info about the faker.
I do not think they are using original dies. And I am not sure there were any original Hungarian manufacturer of these daggers in the Austro-Hungarian period.

Between Old Irish and Eughen Helm, they have been making a good living at this. There is now a new vendor selling these.

The real unfortunate result of these fakes is that there is a genuine Hungarian River forces dagger for sale and no one is interested.

I will try and post this weeks reproductions here also.

Hi Eric,
The one you show is a new reproduction. Was that your question. The dagger i believe is original is

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...IT&item=230325734870.

HOWEVER. I am assuming the gold tint to the anchor is reflection and that he is telling the truth about the grip being ivory.

I sold my original recently for about $600. I think his might be slightly over priced.

If I was interested in buying it, I would ask the specific questions as above.

Flying Dutchman. I believe the dagger in your link, which is identical to one on Ebay US being sold by the new discoveror of Hungarian Daggers, is a reproduction.

Jim,

thanks for the input.
Wow, if you are right, and I have no doubt, I am amazed about the quality of these repros. How can they be so good ? The maker engraving seems to be truly old for me. Crazy.
Thanks for your help.

Jim,
Thanks That's the reason i don't buy daggers from ebay anymore so i'll just wait until i find one here or buy from a respectable dealer when the time is right, i'm fairly young so i have time. Nothing sparks my intrest more than the thought of owning a original Austrian dagger.

Hi Eric.

There are only a handful of originals. one is in the Austrian museum, one is on world daggers web site. Johnson had a photo of another that was in a private collection.

As you are looking, keep in mind that the materials on this dagger and the other reproductions are the key to knowing the reproductions.

Also, do not hesitate to email me direct if you find one you want to run by me.

Nothing can be bought on e-bay these days. Just got two Imperial Russian medals that almost perfect fakes. How to destroy your interest in a hobby !!!!!

It occurs to me that the reproductions are getting better and the buyers are getting dummer.

Many of the non German dagger reproductions are better made than the originals. Who wants a Hungarian AF dagger with a plain, almost crude blade when they can buy one with a beautiful double etched blade with gold shields.

Fortunately most collectors are knowledgeable and manage to find the real stuff.

Also unfortunately the Russian is correct. How many people turn away from a hobby when they finally realize their priced item is a reproduction.

I am new to this forum. I am now scared about what is going to happen with Croatian Daggers as their prices are quite high.

As far as I know there are no fakes regarding Croatian - NDH daggers and the ones that hit the market a few years ago were home made "quality" I guess if you ever held a real Croatian dagger you would be able to tell the difference momentarily. OTOH, buying from respected people and here on the forums is the safest bet and if need be I'll pay a premium to get the real thing ...
