The WWI Iron Cross and the Black Wound Badge are both srew-backs and there are inside pockets on the interior of the tunic liner for their srew-back disks !The Iron Cross has skratched into it's back surface " Weihnachten 1917" , which means Christmas 1917 .

Hi,

that is a beautiful waffenrock. How did your uncle get it? You do know that the eagle is replaced though?

Hello&Thanks Paul! My wife's dad traded a gun/? for this tunic years ago. I didn't realize the eagle had been replaced. I'll let him know. Any 411 on the particular branch or rank associated with this tunic? (I 'm guessing the boards represent the 3rd Battalion/118th Division or along those lines.) Thanks, Pauli

Pauli, tunic is an older model with white piping for infantry, in this case the 3rd company of the 118th infantry regiment..Germans never designated their tunics M-**, this is modern collector nomenclature to distinguish the various models..

I believe the M stands for a depot issued tunic at Munich 1938?

The breast adler has been replaced at some point with an officer quality hand embroidered eagle..you can see the shadow of the original one above and to the left of the current bird..

Mann, very nice waffenrock. The only other bit of info I can add is that the rank is Unterfeldwebel. Kursk is correct on the "M 38".
