I picked this up recently and think it's pretty interesting. It's an S84/98 style bayonet that's been plated and the grips painted or stained black. The only mark is on the finial of the painted scabbard. The frog has been on there a long time, it has shrunken and it wouldn't be possible to remove it without damaging it. The press stud looks like it's from a dress bayonet, it isn't slotted and it's not a perfect fit but it does sit flush. I've seen standard combat bayonets that have been plated post war, but I think this is a period piece.

Is it possible to tell the maker from the scabbard mark? I'd love to learn more about it if anyone has information to share. - Thanks

Hello bayonet looks like a S84/98nA also of WW1 period, maybe You could find any stamps on blade near crossguard,it could be a export variation too, the scabbard is most real WW2 type when WaA883 ?? on ball finial probably, would means only 1940-42 period of Solingen area.b.r.Andy

Hi Andy - I can't find any mark on the bayonet and the scabbard only has the mark on the finial. I'm leaning toward it being a WWII era German dress bayonet, especially given the painted scabbard and frog that's been on there a long time.

Now that the site's back up I wanted to mention that the bayonet is similar in dimensions to a standard S84/98. It definitely has a WWI or Weimar look to it, maybe it's an early bayonet worn with a later scabbard during the '30s? The scabbard and frog have been together a long time, just a guess when the bayonet joined them.

You should remove the grips or minimal share how looks the flashguard from lower side of handle, as imperial is different to Weimar period. Non sloted pressbutton and large 9mm screws speaks for a imperial S84/98nA. The piece was prepared to dress version as nickeled and blackened wood grips.
Anyway the scabbard is too late with WaA883 for similar piece.b.r.Andy

It is a Weimar era bayonet used by the NCO who fought during WWI. They were allowed to wear these WWI bayonets has dress bayonets when serving in the Reichswehr.
