There are quite a few highly rated SA trademarks on Mike's scale.
Which do YOU think is really the rarest ?
This is not a quiz, so any trademark is acceptable. The only rule is you have to post a picture. It does not have to be your dagger or your picture.
Dave
The only other I know of is owned by (I think) member DONS and his is a full Roehm.
What a magnificent blade !
Dave
The ones I don't have yet.
Posting this one for DONS, a Tiegelwerk Riembergbei Breslau. Don's only seen this one once, me never. Sorry for the small image.
I wish I could post a picture...
Friedrich Baurmann & Söhne
I've had a couple of these in recently and like the name (the battleship of SA's)
The quality on these was also fantastic.

When I bought my Ernst Bruckmann and Eugan Scheidt I googled them and nothing was found as far as on a dealers site or on any collectors forums. The same thing when I bought my RZM 7-69 H A Erbe AG.
Ernst Rottgen. Heres one..that was never seen up until about a year ago. I forget who the owner was and I hope they don't mind me posting it.

I like that Rottgen. And what's with the Rudolf Schmidt? Is it supposed to be the Michelin tire man with an afro?
Here's one I posted awhile back and got some feedback that it was pretty rare. A Friedrich Geigis.
This is the rarest I have at the moment....
Good one John! I have never seen that one before now.

This is a very good thread indeed. Bringing out some very rare makers a couple of which I have not seen before. I have a G.Felix Gloriawerk that I believe is not too common. my stuff is packed away for home renovation but I`ll post a pic asap.
John, I am surprised you would sell that dagger! An early SA with bag is about as rare a factory original as you will find on today's market. Only a bagged SS with presentation in a bag that I have seen would be more rare. Early daggers, even HJs, with bags are hard to find, much more so than an RZM piece, of which I have seen SEVERAL over the years.

Hi Vesuvio,
Here is the Wilh. Weltersbach you mentioned. Sold this one recently.

Here is another one I have not seen before, it is in a NSKK scabbardand is WILH KREIGER, has nay one seen one of these?

Hello, I have only seen 2 G Felix Gloriawerk daggers in my 30+ years and here they are, one thing I have noticed is they are one of the most high quality makers I have ever seen, the crossgraining on them is great and they are well fitted.

Rob Giersh
That bagged Scheidt shown by vintagetimenow resides in my collection, bag and all. I find I have most of these rare ones so I wonder how rare some of them really are? I think scarce is a better description. I really do think there are some buried in collections like mine that are rarely take out for show. I have sold mainly duplicates so far to fellow collectors.
I like them all and most know I am primarily an SA collector. In the years I have been collecting, I think I have seen all the ones listed excepting two shown so far. Every time I try to get out of collecting SA's, I see one I don't have and get sucked right back into the game. It is truly an addiction.
As Brenda says though, "It beats hanging out in t..ty bars". What a good wife!

Hello,
here a rare Sa Dagger with the maker C.Lütters & cie Löwenwerk Solingen
Gruß Ralf ( Mikatim )
Hello, Here is one I got last weekend, My daggers look much better, but I used windex on my scanner and it just ruined the scanner, but this is a Josef Wolf and I think it is VERY rare, but would like some input. I paid quite a bit and would like to make sure I was right on it.
Description: Josef Wolf
I sent the wrong picture sorry. I bought a Josef Wolf with the double XX logo last weekend and I think it is rare, but do not know and would appreciate any input. PLease excus the poor pictures as I cleaned my scanner with windex and it just ruined it.
Here's a Wilhelm Halbach.
Three rare birds..
Ya gotta love those Pfeilringwerks.
Thats a great looking dagger Bernie. Pfeilringwers is a sharp looking motto.
I think we need to make an online catalog of pictures of all the makers for reference! Any ideas how or who would host it?

Grah Reinhold
I haven't seen this one here, yet....I was told that it's a not-often-seen variant.
Beautiful marks
Remeve+Bismarck
My David Malsch... Skyline Drive says he has one and DONS (?) has another... how rare are they?
I have one-they are pretty rare and wipe that fingerprint off the blade.Mike
Eugen Haering
boy, that is one beautiful Haering-.Mike
That Koller's a beauty Ilya - very USMC!!
Now anyone who can find me a F Koeller and Co. i'll marry
Heres the full picture of the Haering. Mint blade and scabbard but the hilt still has the original varnish which is worn in places and really does not look very nice. I have left it alone as I believe I would likely screw it up if I messed with it. Also I believe the varnish is probally original to the dagger and it might be best just to leave it alone. The Haering is a rarity 10 on Dr. Mike's list. Mike
I like that dagger Mike...

Just to clear things up-the rarest Maker that we have absolute proof positive evidence of its existence is Bruno Heimbucher-a picture of it was shown in a Manion auction about 15 years ago. I have never seen a live dagger by this maker and would rate it the rarest KNOWN maker-Mike
Mike,
Who has a copy of the picture ?
I am wary of Manions. Before I gave up looking at their site a couple of years ago, I found many mistakes in descriptions and a good seasoning of what I thought were fakes.
The SA list that I am building does not include Heimbucher as a known maker. I'll probably put it with a few others as "Possible"
Dave
How rare is this maker mark?
Well??!!...I'm sure someone has an opinion....

Yorkshireman!
There are no complete SA dagger references to be found and everyone is waiting for Wittmanns SA bible, so in the meantime you can try this one:
German daggers of the World War II
A photographic reference: Volume 2
(SA, Feldhernhalle, SS, NSKK, NPEA, RAD, Hitlerjugend)
By Thomas M. Johnson
This book is a Photographic reference filled with amazing pictures.
Not so much historical facts but an interesting reference anyway.
This volume contains 118 pages about SA"

First time i have ever seen that eickhorn logo..on a SA... what time period is it?

It is very early -see the thread about Christmas daggers. I know of two others and have a photo of a third. This one makes four.

How rare is the large double oval serrated tail Eickhorn?
John
John, Not seen a lot. Early, no Gau mark.

Actually, the large oval Eickhorns are usually found with Gau mark Wf.
I don't know if this maker would be considered rare but I haven't seen to many of them!

Justinuswerk is not that uncommon. I would say middle of the rarity scale. Looks like the condition more than makes up for rarity. Nice blade.
What a great thread. I'm not a SA collector but I love the different TM's.

Today I picked up a "Ho" marked SA. I'll try to post some pics tonight. Until then, Any 411 on rarity of a C.Eppenstein - Sohne/Solingen. Gau mark "Ho"??? I wish I could say that it hasn't been messed with..but there are a few scratches on the pommel nut, also a few "chips" of wood missing. Anyway, Thanks in advance for your comment. The tang has an "A" over the # "24" Inside are the letters, "E" and "W". Cheers, Pauli
"a"
Cheers, Pauli
Beautiful and excellent dagger- the handle is gorgeous with perfect fit on the eagle and crossguards- congrats-Mike
Quite rare maker
Thanks guys!
I am/was concerned about the cross grain though, is this typical? (better pics may be needed?) anyway, This blade fits "me" better than the "Pack", I gave away on Fathers day. A tad bit "saltier"... better matched to my collection. Cheers, Pauli
The crossgrain looks OK.
I have always wondered what that trademark was ...
1. Log on fire
2. Headdress with wings and horns.
3. A bratwurst catching fire on Mike McAlvanah's grill
Dave
Thats a nice Dagger. Quite a bit rarer than a E.Pack. Congrats

This one appeared at our local sites... attic find in bad shape. I am not able to read the maker in full, or find it somewhere... Who is it?
Jan
That is Sudd Messerfabrik located in Gefrees.
Dave
Thanks a lot Dave, I was not able to find any reference on "Südd Meserfabrik".... I am curious - how rare are they?
Jan
They are not easy to find but are not rare either. People tend to pay less attention to these "empty double oval" trademarks as they don't have the same appeal as some of the special designs.
There are enough of these "empty double oval" trademarks that I am convinced that these were a stock item for the people who prepared the templates and a manufacturer without a specific logo could just order one of these with their name. 100% speculation, of course.
Dave
Thanks Dave, that is new info to me, but sounds logicaly. To tell the truth I was curious about the empty oval...
Jan
Dave,I have a chance to get a KOBER sa dagger,Are they rare or not?

Richard Drees and Franz Steinhoff

Ilya those look like some very nice SA's. can you post a photo of the steinhoff in full please mate
Sean
Here´s another SA from Steinhoff with group stamp NS for "Niedersachsen" (Lower Saxony).
My vote would be Bruno Heimbucher, if it exists.
This maker was mentioned in an old Manions catalog. They showed a pic of the front of the dagger but not the maker's mark.
As Manions was not always that accurate, and as that was the only one ever mentioned, who knows if it is real ?

There are more than 10 really rare ones, so picking the top ones would depend on your taste. Some of the logos are very inventive and interesting, some are just stock "empty double oval" and other are the name and location written on the blade.

While people ask me all the time "What is THE rarest SA?", I've never been prepared to answer until now. I can get it down to the rarest TWO- so, in alphabetical order they are- OTTO LINDER and ARTUR MELCHER. Amen -Mike
Mikey,
Like a true Irishman, it's tough to nail you down to a specific answer on such a philisophical question. I think this is as good as it's gonna get
Because this topic only refers to the EARLY SAs, maker marked with no RZMs or Transitionals, I have erased several pics just showing inappropriate types. Mike
Get on them, Mike. Those "inappropriate posters" need to be watched.
As to rarity, there is one even rarer.

Regarding the Boker- people have done this before- take a pic of the front of a normal SA, then switch a Boker SS blade into a SA handle and take a pic of the reverse. Of course they will never bring it to a show or allow examination. Mike

He guys what about E. Gierling?
where does the Gebr. Torley TM rank on 1-10 scale??..thanks Robert
Its a solid 10 I believe with 3000 being made. This is from memory, so I might be wrong on the amount made but last I checked it was a 10!
incorrect on number made(3000) as no one really knows how many were made - incorrect on rating of 10- MJM
incorrect on number made(3000) as no one really knows how many were made - incorrect on rating of 10- MJM
Hi all,
Its a 9! Gierling I mean ... But y'all probably know that better then I do. Possibly 1000 made, but that number probably is made of guessing? Do listings mean "unknown but probably less than a 1000" when they say "1000"? I dont have the org McSarr, but the Nakita, and I have
Siegert's book, which is essential, and WAY awesome, for the pics alone
Sincerely,
Karin-Renate
OK, I'm told I'm telling unallowed stuff there, I'm sorry, wasn't aware of ANY circumstances related to ANY of this ... please, mods/admins, by all means, delete or edit my post, masking numbers/names/whatever necessary ...
I can't edit myself anymore, I tried, but, too much time exceeded
incorrect on rating of 10
Surely Torley is a 10?
My apologies then, I was under the impression that it was a 10. What is its rarity number then?
I am not trying to ba an a..hole here, but if people is interested in SA daggers, contact Mike McAlvana, and buy the McSarr list.
It is a great list to have
carlos1
Well I check Ralf Siegerts book, he lists it as an 10 and with about 10,000 made, pg 309 I believe.
So it seem there is conflicting views here then.
I must say one gets a lot of flak on these forums. Sometimes people are downright rude (I am recalling all the times I have been shot down on here), maybe its time to migrate to WAF indefinitly...
Well I check Ralf Siegerts book, he lists it as an 10 and with about 10,000 made, pg 309 I believe...
Hi François
YES, I saw that too? But Nakida says its a
1000 made, which would make more sense if its a 10, and both these works say it IS a 10
But, OK, just building op, to ask about that? I
believe The Nakidalist is actually McSarr-list, but with added goodies? Nakida has
permission to use McSarr! And, YES, I have a paid-for Nakida here.
I could be wrong though, what do I know after all, right, I'm just beginning with everything, but, Siegert, I'm told he's here on the forum? And, does the German SA book say 10.000 made for Torley too? Or is it just the translated English book that says this amount?
Just curious, I'll make a addendum by hand for incorrect number if its not correct! For future reference.
Sincerely
not intending to be a Flak-target,
Karin-Renate
Krullies!
In the English version of the book it states 10.000 were made.
I was also under the impression that this was a "added" McSarr list as studied by Mr. Siegert owns observations on rarity of makers.
I am sure that on different continents different rarities would exist between different makers. Maybe in the USA Torleys might be more common than in Europe
Would be nice to have Mr.Siegerts opinion on this or even Nakida?
Don't worry my flak jacket is out of the cupboard and on at the moment...
FS
...I am sure that on different continents different rarities would exist between different makers. Maybe in the USA Torleys might be more common than in Europe
Hi François,
Thats an angle I never really thought of? I guess, the rarity goes for the world, with the internet + all, the market is all of us collectors? But, maybe not!
BUT, I recall a discussion, that has all different marks of Eickhorn as subject. And, there can be a subdivision for rarity for makers! Like, if Eickhorn uses 6 or 7 different marks, maybe the maker is a 1, with over 50000 daggers made? Some Eickhorn with a mark only used for 500 or so daggers could make THOSE daggers a higher number?
Now, I dunno, I've been talking about HACO somewhere, and learned a bit about this maker. Well, not maker, but distributor, better said! So, every dagger got numbered? THAT is SPECIAL! So, even if HACO is only 5, I can understand that these things cost so much? Maybe HACO can be subdivided too? But, we'd need to find out their makers/suppliers then though, I guess
Anyway, to be short, perhaps 1 general rarity for a maker, has subrarities too? And, ofcourse, your idea, I'd like to know about THAT too ... But, somehow, I
don't think an Eickhorn would get a different number over here in Europe from the number it gets in the States? Or Australia? Or your Africa ofcourse
Sincerely,
Karin-Renate
Here is a simple logo, that I have not seen in the last 26 pages, to add to the list. Gebr.Heller

Hey Oleg1,
You mean this 1? As attached? Its Bonntgen & Sabin, or Bonsawerk. Some 6000 made, nice whopping higher rating on "the" list
I can say THAT cant I? Or ... ? Not? You'll have to get either 1 of 3 works (
that I know of! Siegert's book, the Nakidalist or the McSarrlist) on this to know WHAT number

Thanks I have a K98 bayo made in 1917 with this maker. Just was wondering the name.
Youre very welcome Oleg1
Is your bayonette in here somewhere? I never gave anything like that attention, so far? K98 is a rifle, right? With 1 of them handles on the side, you pull back, to load a bullet? Or ... ? Anyhow, not Präsentationsdolch-stuff I guess, but still, cool
A lot of these dagger/bayonet makers started by making straight razors, scissors, pocket knives and kitchen ware. That is a great little ad. Karin. Thanks for posting it. I've never seen an SA marked with that mark. Though I would love to see one.
Also yes Karin a K98 was the standard weapon that was issued to a Soldier in the Wehrmacht. Think 12-13 million were produced by wars end. It is a 5 shot, bolt action rifle. Its not nearly as pretty and stylish as those pin and medals you collect though.

Yes, indeed! Inoticed that, some months ago, finding out how to translate what was going on in a maker mark into words. There was more to that mark, and there are other collectingworlds specializing in that! Very cool. I also found daggerpics with marks, I think I saved as much as I found, but I can be trusted to make a mess of my computer *LOL* Ill start the hunt ...

5 shots only? Like, wow, you'd have to reload every 5 shots? Is that clips? Or 5 single bullets? Or both, like, you have to load clips you can load in the rifle? I have been reading
War of the Rats, just in a cr*ppy dutch translation, but its a great story! With a female main character even, yay! The end, is very very heavy to read, very emotional, but also very cold, and, somehow, a weird unexpected end, maybe it even felt unfair, in a way, but, such is life, I guess, and war is even worse? So, anyway, some technicalities came along, like rifle comparison, and how the Russian Nagant rifle, was more loved by German (+ ofcourse Russian) snipers then the German Mauser. The Russian gun had a better long distance precision. Interesting stuff. Not all clear (yet?) to me, so, I had to ask, thanks
Sincerely,
Karin-Renate

Those are both very epic-looking, sirs! What rarity is the Koch & Rau (no CH is there?) now? The list I have tells 8, but, Im told that list is renewed now? The Herbertz&Meurer I posted is now up a number from 7 to 8 in rarity!
Bye,
