There was a similar rifle Built by the British in WWII. The Boys .55 anti-tank rifle. Used by several countries including the US> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boys_anti-tank_rifle

The story is the Pershing got one of the rounds of the rifle and was so impressed that he sent it home for development. And the US came up with the .50 caliber HMG.
